We designed our new hail test for PV modules using data from 1 GW of hail-damaged projects assessed by PVEL in the field
Hail has emerged as a major concern of solar insurance providers, asset owners and investors, especially for companies that operate in regions where hailstorms are common. In some areas, concerns around hail risks have resulted in soaring insurance premiums and extremely limited policy options.
PVEL has introduced a new test, the hail stress sequence, to our PV Module Product Qualification Program to help address hail concerns. The results from our new test will help downstream project stakeholders evaluate hail-related risks and benchmark the hail resistance of different PV module bills of materials. The test was designed using insights from PVEL’s lab and field testing and feedback from our partners around the world.
PVEL’s testing from the lab and the field indicates that certain PV modules withstand hail more effectively than others. Download our white paper to learn more about hail risks for solar assets and explore initial findings from the development of PVEL’s hail test.
